Investors Appear Satisfied With Lux Industries Limited's (NSE:LUXIND) Prospects As Shares Rocket 25%

Published
NSEI:LUXIND

Despite an already strong run, Lux Industries Limited (NSE:LUXIND) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 25% in the last thirty days. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 23% is also fairly reasonable.

Since its price has surged higher, Lux Industries may be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 42.5x, since almost half of all companies in India have P/E ratios under 33x and even P/E's lower than 19x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

Lux Industries could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Growth For Lux Industries?

Lux Industries' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 8.8% decrease to the company's bottom line. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 52% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 82% during the coming year according to the only analyst following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 25% growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we can see why Lux Industries is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Lux Industries' P/E

Lux Industries shares have received a push in the right direction, but its P/E is elevated too. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that Lux Industries maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
