Dollar Industries Limited's (NSE:DOLLAR) investors are due to receive a payment of ₹3.00 per share on 1st of September. Based on this payment, the dividend yield on the company's stock will be 0.6%, which is an attractive boost to shareholder returns.

Dollar Industries' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Dollar Industries' earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 98.1%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 11%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dollar Industries Doesn't Have A Long Payment History

It is great to see that Dollar Industries has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. Since 2017, the annual payment back then was ₹1.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ₹3.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 17% a year over that time. The dividend has been growing rapidly, however with such a short payment history we can't know for sure if payment can continue to grow over the long term, so caution may be warranted.

Dollar Industries May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Earnings has been rising at 4.1% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. If Dollar Industries is struggling to find viable investments, it always has the option to increase its payout ratio to pay more to shareholders.

In Summary

In summary, while it's good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we are a bit cautious about Dollar Industries' payments, as there could be some issues with sustaining them into the future. While Dollar Industries is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
