The Returns On Capital At Apollo Sindoori Hotels (NSE:APOLSINHOT) Don't Inspire Confidence
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. In light of that, when we looked at Apollo Sindoori Hotels (NSE:APOLSINHOT) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Apollo Sindoori Hotels, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.062 = ₹78m ÷ (₹1.7b - ₹391m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2022).
Thus, Apollo Sindoori Hotels has an ROCE of 6.2%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Commercial Services industry average of 9.0%.

How Are Returns Trending?
In terms of Apollo Sindoori Hotels' historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 27% over the last five years. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
On a related note, Apollo Sindoori Hotels has decreased its current liabilities to 24% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. Effectively this means their suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of the business, which reduces some elements of risk. Some would claim this reduces the business' efficiency at generating ROCE since it is now funding more of the operations with its own money.
What We Can Learn From Apollo Sindoori Hotels' ROCE
While returns have fallen for Apollo Sindoori Hotels in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 141% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So should these growth trends continue, we'd be optimistic on the stock going forward.
