Are Capacit'e Infraprojects Limited's (NSE:CAPACITE) Fundamentals Good Enough to Warrant Buying Given The Stock's Recent Weakness?
It is hard to get excited after looking at Capacit'e Infraprojects' (NSE:CAPACITE) recent performance, when its stock has declined 12% over the past week. However, the company's fundamentals look pretty decent, and long-term financials are usually aligned with future market price movements. Specifically, we decided to study Capacit'e Infraprojects' ROE in this article.
ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Capacit'e Infraprojects is:
11% = ₹1.8b ÷ ₹16b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. So, this means that for every ₹1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of ₹0.11.
What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.
Capacit'e Infraprojects' Earnings Growth And 11% ROE
When you first look at it, Capacit'e Infraprojects' ROE doesn't look that attractive. Yet, a closer study shows that the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 13%. Moreover, we are quite pleased to see that Capacit'e Infraprojects' net income grew significantly at a rate of 22% over the last five years. Taking into consideration that the ROE is not particularly high, we reckon that there could also be other factors at play which could be influencing the company's growth. For example, it is possible that the company's management has made some good strategic decisions, or that the company has a low payout ratio.
As a next step, we compared Capacit'e Infraprojects' net income growth with the industry and were disappointed to see that the company's growth is lower than the industry average growth of 31% in the same period.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in. By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. One good indicator of expected earnings growth is the P/E ratio which determines the price the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings prospects. So, you may want to check if Capacit'e Infraprojects is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
Is Capacit'e Infraprojects Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
Capacit'e Infraprojects doesn't pay any regular dividends currently which essentially means that it has been reinvesting all of its profits into the business. This definitely contributes to the high earnings growth number that we discussed above.
Summary
In total, it does look like Capacit'e Infraprojects has some positive aspects to its business. Specifically, its fairly high earnings growth number, which no doubt was backed by the company's high earnings retention. Still, the low ROE means that all that reinvestment is not reaping a lot of benefit to the investors. We also studied the latest analyst forecasts and found that the company's earnings growth is expected be similar to its current growth rate.
