Stock Analysis
Bandhan Bank (NSE:BANDHANBNK) stock falls 8.7% in past week as five-year earnings and shareholder returns continue downward trend
Generally speaking long term investing is the way to go. But along the way some stocks are going to perform badly. To wit, the Bandhan Bank Limited (NSE:BANDHANBNK) share price managed to fall 70% over five long years. That's not a lot of fun for true believers. And some of the more recent buyers are probably worried, too, with the stock falling 37% in the last year. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 28% in the last 90 days.
With the stock having lost 8.7% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, Bandhan Bank moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.
The modest 1.0% dividend yield is unlikely to be guiding the market view of the stock. Revenue is actually up 13% over the time period. So it seems one might have to take closer look at the fundamentals to understand why the share price languishes. After all, there may be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective
Bandhan Bank shareholders are down 37% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 12%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 11% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
