Endurance Technologies (NSE:ENDURANCE) Could Be Struggling To Allocate Capital
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Having said that, from a first glance at Endurance Technologies (NSE:ENDURANCE) we aren't jumping out of our chairs at how returns are trending, but let's have a deeper look.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Endurance Technologies:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.14 = ₹7.1b ÷ (₹74b - ₹22b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
Thus, Endurance Technologies has an ROCE of 14%. That's a pretty standard return and it's in line with the industry average of 14%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Endurance Technologies Tell Us?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Endurance Technologies, we didn't gain much confidence. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 25%, but since then they've fallen to 14%. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a side note, Endurance Technologies has done well to pay down its current liabilities to 30% of total assets. That could partly explain why the ROCE has dropped. Effectively this means their suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of the business, which reduces some elements of risk. Since the business is basically funding more of its operations with it's own money, you could argue this has made the business less efficient at generating ROCE.
The Bottom Line
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Endurance Technologies is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. Furthermore the stock has climbed 49% over the last five years, it would appear that investors are upbeat about the future. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we would look further into this stock to make sure the other metrics justify the positive view.
Like most companies, Endurance Technologies does come with some risks, and we've found 1 warning sign that you should be aware of.
