iCon Group Ltd's (TLV:ICON) Shares Bounce 29% But Its Business Still Trails The Market

Despite an already strong run, iCon Group Ltd (TLV:ICON) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 29% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 83% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, iCon Group's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 12.2x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Israel, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 17x and even P/E's above 26x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

The earnings growth achieved at iCon Group over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is iCon Group's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, iCon Group would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 11% gain to the company's bottom line. Ultimately though, it couldn't turn around the poor performance of the prior period, with EPS shrinking 53% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to grow by 9.8% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term earnings decline into perspective.

In light of this, it's understandable that iCon Group's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From iCon Group's P/E?

iCon Group's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of iCon Group revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term are contributing to its low P/E, given the market is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
