Is Ecoppia Scientific (TLV:ECPA) In A Good Position To Invest In Growth?
There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Ecoppia Scientific (TLV:ECPA) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

Does Ecoppia Scientific Have A Long Cash Runway?
You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. In June 2023, Ecoppia Scientific had US$56m in cash, and was debt-free. In the last year, its cash burn was US$21m. That means it had a cash runway of about 2.7 years as of June 2023. Arguably, that's a prudent and sensible length of runway to have. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.
How Is Ecoppia Scientific's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
In our view, Ecoppia Scientific doesn't yet produce significant amounts of operating revenue, since it reported just US$3.6m in the last twelve months. Therefore, for the purposes of this analysis we'll focus on how the cash burn is tracking. With the cash burn rate up 3.0% in the last year, it seems that the company is ratcheting up investment in the business over time. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but investors should be mindful of the fact that will shorten the cash runway. Ecoppia Scientific makes us a little nervous due to its lack of substantial operating revenue. So we'd generally prefer stocks from this list of stocks that have analysts forecasting growth.
How Easily Can Ecoppia Scientific Raise Cash?
Since its cash burn is increasing (albeit only slightly), Ecoppia Scientific shareholders should still be mindful of the possibility it will require more cash in the future. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.
Ecoppia Scientific's cash burn of US$21m is about 69% of its US$30m market capitalisation. That's very high expenditure relative to the company's size, suggesting it is an extremely high risk stock.
So, Should We Worry About Ecoppia Scientific's Cash Burn?
Even though its cash burn relative to its market cap makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Ecoppia Scientific's cash runway was relatively promising. We don't think its cash burn is particularly problematic, but after considering the range of factors in this article, we do think shareholders should be monitoring how it changes over time. On another note, Ecoppia Scientific has 4 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit concerning) we think you should know about.
