Hilan's (TLV:HLAN) Solid Earnings Are Supported By Other Strong Factors
Hilan Ltd.'s (TLV:HLAN) earnings announcement last week was disappointing for investors, despite the decent profit numbers. Our analysis says that investors should be optimistic, as the strong profit is built on solid foundations.
Zooming In On Hilan's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
Over the twelve months to March 2025, Hilan recorded an accrual ratio of -0.12. That indicates that its free cash flow was a fair bit more than its statutory profit. To wit, it produced free cash flow of ₪372m during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of ₪254.8m. Hilan's free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.

Our Take On Hilan's Profit Performance
As we discussed above, Hilan has perfectly satisfactory free cash flow relative to profit. Because of this, we think Hilan's earnings potential is at least as good as it seems, and maybe even better! And on top of that, its earnings per share have grown at 59% per year over the last three years. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. While it's very important to consider the profit and loss statement, you can also learn a lot about a company by looking at its balance sheet. Today we've zoomed in on a single data point to better understand the nature of Hilan's profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying.
