China Water Affairs Group's (HKG:855) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
China Water Affairs Group Limited (HKG:855) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 18th of November to HK$0.18. This takes the annual payment to 5.0% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

China Water Affairs Group's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. Prior to this announcement, China Water Affairs Group's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 48.0%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 24% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was HK$0.05 in 2012, and the most recent fiscal year payment was HK$0.36. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 22% a year over that time. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. China Water Affairs Group has impressed us by growing EPS at 15% per year over the past five years. With a decent amount of growth and a low payout ratio, we think this bodes well for China Water Affairs Group's prospects of growing its dividend payments in the future.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think China Water Affairs Group will make a great income stock. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
