Guangdong Investment (HKG:270) Has Announced A Dividend Of HK$0.0727
The board of Guangdong Investment Limited (HKG:270) has announced that it will pay a dividend of HK$0.0727 per share on the 24th of July. This means that the annual payment is 5.2% of the current stock price, which is lower than what the rest of the industry is paying.
Guangdong Investment's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Based on the last payment, Guangdong Investment was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
EPS is set to fall by 2.4% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 56%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future.

Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The annual payment during the last 10 years was HK$0.23 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was HK$0.312. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 3.1% over that duration. The dividend has seen some fluctuations in the past, so even though the dividend was raised this year, we should remember that it has been cut in the past.
Guangdong Investment May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Although it's important to note that Guangdong Investment's earnings per share has basically not grown from where it was five years ago, which could erode the purchasing power of the dividend over time.
In Summary
Overall, it's not great to see that the dividend has been cut, but this might be explained by the payments being a bit high previously. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
