Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see Jiangsu Expressway Company Limited (HKG:177) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next 4 days. The ex-dividend date occurs one day before the record date which is the day on which shareholders need to be on the company's books in order to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is an important date to be aware of as any purchase of the stock made on or after this date might mean a late settlement that doesn't show on the record date. Thus, you can purchase Jiangsu Expressway's shares before the 2nd of July in order to receive the dividend, which the company will pay on the 26th of July.

The company's upcoming dividend is CN¥0.47 a share, following on from the last 12 months, when the company distributed a total of CN¥0.47 per share to shareholders. Last year's total dividend payments show that Jiangsu Expressway has a trailing yield of 6.1% on the current share price of HK$8.32. We love seeing companies pay a dividend, but it's also important to be sure that laying the golden eggs isn't going to kill our golden goose! We need to see whether the dividend is covered by earnings and if it's growing.

Dividends are typically paid out of company income, so if a company pays out more than it earned, its dividend is usually at a higher risk of being cut. Jiangsu Expressway paid out 53% of its earnings to investors last year, a normal payout level for most businesses. Yet cash flows are even more important than profits for assessing a dividend, so we need to see if the company generated enough cash to pay its distribution. It paid out 93% of its free cash flow in the form of dividends last year, which is outside the comfort zone for most businesses. Cash flows are usually much more volatile than earnings, so this could be a temporary effect - but we'd generally want to look more closely here.

While Jiangsu Expressway's dividends were covered by the company's reported profits, cash is somewhat more important, so it's not great to see that the company didn't generate enough cash to pay its dividend. Were this to happen repeatedly, this would be a risk to Jiangsu Expressway's ability to maintain its dividend.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Companies that aren't growing their earnings can still be valuable, but it is even more important to assess the sustainability of the dividend if it looks like the company will struggle to grow. If earnings decline and the company is forced to cut its dividend, investors could watch the value of their investment go up in smoke. It's not encouraging to see that Jiangsu Expressway's earnings are effectively flat over the past five years. Better than seeing them fall off a cliff, for sure, but the best dividend stocks grow their earnings meaningfully over the long run. Earnings have been growing somewhat, but we're concerned dividend payments consumed most of the company's cash flow over the past year.

The main way most investors will assess a company's dividend prospects is by checking the historical rate of dividend growth. Jiangsu Expressway has delivered an average of 2.7% per year annual increase in its dividend, based on the past 10 years of dividend payments.

The Bottom Line

Is Jiangsu Expressway an attractive dividend stock, or better left on the shelf? In addition to earnings being flat, Jiangsu Expressway is paying out a reasonable percentage of its earnings as profits. However, the dividend was not well covered by free cash flow. It's not an attractive combination from a dividend perspective, and we're inclined to pass on this one for the time being.

With that being said, if you're still considering Jiangsu Expressway as an investment, you'll find it beneficial to know what risks this stock is facing. Our analysis shows 1 warning sign for Jiangsu Expressway and you should be aware of this before buying any shares.
