Nimble Holdings (HKG:186) Has Debt But No Earnings; Should You Worry?
Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We note that Nimble Holdings Company Limited (HKG:186) does have debt on its balance sheet. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Nimble Holdings Carry?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of March 2022 Nimble Holdings had HK$5.65b of debt, an increase on HK$2.38b, over one year. On the flip side, it has HK$1.59b in cash leading to net debt of about HK$4.06b.
A Look At Nimble Holdings' Liabilities
Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Nimble Holdings had liabilities of HK$5.41b due within 12 months and liabilities of HK$3.47b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had HK$1.59b in cash and HK$55.0m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling HK$7.24b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
The deficiency here weighs heavily on the HK$2.09b company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. At the end of the day, Nimble Holdings would probably need a major re-capitalization if its creditors were to demand repayment. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is Nimble Holdings's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
Over 12 months, Nimble Holdings reported revenue of HK$423m, which is a gain of 112%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. So its pretty obvious shareholders are hoping for more growth!
Caveat Emptor
Despite the top line growth, Nimble Holdings still had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last year. Indeed, it lost HK$95m at the EBIT level. Combining this information with the significant liabilities we already touched on makes us very hesitant about this stock, to say the least. That said, it is possible that the company will turn its fortunes around. Nevertheless, we would not bet on it given that it lost HK$90m in just last twelve months, and it doesn't have much by way of liquid assets. So we think this stock is quite risky. We'd prefer to pass. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. To that end, you should be aware of the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Nimble Holdings .
