CSMall Group Limited (HKG:1815) Stock Rockets 25% As Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected
CSMall Group Limited (HKG:1815) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 25% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 7.5% in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, it's still not a stretch to say that CSMall Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Specialty Retail industry in Hong Kong, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.4x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does CSMall Group's Recent Performance Look Like?
For instance, CSMall Group's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like CSMall Group's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 67%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 9.9% in total. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 31% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this information, we find it interesting that CSMall Group is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.
What We Can Learn From CSMall Group's P/S?
Its shares have lifted substantially and now CSMall Group's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that CSMall Group's average P/S is a bit surprising since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, the probability of a share price decline will become quite substantial, placing shareholders at risk.
Having said that, be aware CSMall Group is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those shouldn't be ignored.
