Many investors consider it preferable to invest in profitable companies over unprofitable ones, because profitability suggests a business is sustainable. That said, the current statutory profit is not always a good guide to a company's underlying profitability. Today we'll focus on whether this year's statutory profits are a good guide to understanding Yida China Holdings (HKG:3639).

It's good to see that over the last twelve months Yida China Holdings made a profit of CN¥449.3m on revenue of CN¥5.46b. In the last few years both its revenue and its profit have fallen, as you can see in the chart below.

Of course, it is only sensible to look beyond the statutory profits and question how well those numbers represent the sustainable earnings power of the business. This article will focus on the impact unusual items have had on Yida China Holdings' statutory earnings. Note: we always recommend investors check balance sheet strength. How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Importantly, our data indicates that Yida China Holdings' profit received a boost of CN¥1b in unusual items, over the last year. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. Yida China Holdings had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to June 2020. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.

Our Take On Yida China Holdings' Profit Performance

As previously mentioned, Yida China Holdings' large boost from unusual items won't be there indefinitely, so its statutory earnings are probably a poor guide to its underlying profitability. As a result, we think it may well be the case that Yida China Holdings' underlying earnings power is lower than its statutory profit. Sadly, its EPS was down over the last twelve months. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. For example, Yida China Holdings has 3 warning signs (and 2 which are a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.

This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of Yida China Holdings' profit. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company.
