Hang Lung Group (HKG:10) Has Affirmed Its Dividend Of HK$0.65

The board of Hang Lung Group Limited (HKG:10) has announced that it will pay a dividend of HK$0.65 per share on the 16th of June. This means the dividend yield will be fairly typical at 7.6%.

Hang Lung Group's Projections Indicate Future Payments May Be Unsustainable

While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. Before this announcement, Hang Lung Group was paying out 73% of earnings, but a comparatively small 23% of free cash flows. Since the dividend is just paying out cash to shareholders, we care more about the cash payout ratio from which we can see plenty is being left over for reinvestment in the business.

EPS is set to fall by 25.0% over the next 12 months if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could reach 98%, which could put the dividend under pressure if earnings don't start to improve.

Hang Lung Group Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was HK$0.81, compared to the most recent full-year payment of HK$0.86. Dividend payments have grown at less than 1% a year over this period. Although we can't deny that the dividend has been remarkably stable in the past, the growth has been pretty muted.

The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. However, initial appearances might be deceiving. Hang Lung Group's earnings per share has shrunk at 25% a year over the past five years. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in.

Our Thoughts On Hang Lung Group's Dividend

In summary, we are pleased with the dividend remaining consistent, and we think there is a good chance of this continuing in the future. While the payments look sustainable for now, earnings have been shrinking so the dividend could come under pressure in the future. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. To that end, Hang Lung Group has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
