Medialink Group (HKG:2230) Is Paying Out Less In Dividends Than Last Year
The board of Medialink Group Limited (HKG:2230) has announced it will be reducing its dividend by 19% from last year's payment of HK$0.0042 on the 4th of November, with shareholders receiving HK$0.0034. The dividend yield of 9.8% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.

Medialink Group's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Based on the last payment, Medialink Group's earnings were much higher than the dividend, but it wasn't converting those earnings into cash flow. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.
Unless the company can turn things around, EPS could fall by 18.4% over the next year. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, we estimate the payout ratio could be 61%, which is definitely feasible to continue.
Medialink Group's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Even in its relatively short history, the company has reduced the dividend at least once. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. The annual payment during the last 5 years was HK$0.013 in 2019, and the most recent fiscal year payment was HK$0.0121. This works out to be a decline of approximately 1.4% per year over that time. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Medialink Group's earnings per share has shrunk at 18% a year over the past five years. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future.
Medialink Group's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, it's not great to see that the dividend has been cut, but this might be explained by the payments being a bit high previously. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
