The Returns On Capital At Anhui Conch Cement (HKG:914) Don't Inspire Confidence
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Although, when we looked at Anhui Conch Cement (HKG:914), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Anhui Conch Cement:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.058 = CN¥13b ÷ (CN¥247b - CN¥31b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
Thus, Anhui Conch Cement has an ROCE of 5.8%. On its own that's a low return, but compared to the average of 3.5% generated by the Basic Materials industry, it's much better.

So How Is Anhui Conch Cement's ROCE Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Anhui Conch Cement, we didn't gain much confidence. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 5.8% from 30% five years ago. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
In Conclusion...
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Anhui Conch Cement is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. However, despite the promising trends, the stock has fallen 37% over the last five years, so there might be an opportunity here for astute investors. So we think it'd be worthwhile to look further into this stock given the trends look encouraging.
