Hilong Holding (HKG:1623) Is Doing The Right Things To Multiply Its Share Price
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at Hilong Holding (HKG:1623) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Hilong Holding is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.093 = CN¥568m ÷ (CN¥8.1b - CN¥2.0b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
So, Hilong Holding has an ROCE of 9.3%. On its own, that's a low figure but it's around the 7.9% average generated by the Energy Services industry.

How Are Returns Trending?
Hilong Holding is showing promise given that its ROCE is trending up and to the right. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 36% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. It's worth looking deeper into this though because while it's great that the business is more efficient, it might also mean that going forward the areas to invest internally for the organic growth are lacking.
The Bottom Line On Hilong Holding's ROCE
To sum it up, Hilong Holding is collecting higher returns from the same amount of capital, and that's impressive. Although the company may be facing some issues elsewhere since the stock has plunged 75% in the last five years. Regardless, we think the underlying fundamentals warrant this stock for further investigation.
