Stock Analysis

Shareholders in Jiumaojiu International Holdings (HKG:9922) have lost 89%, as stock drops 11% this past week

Long term investing works well, but it doesn't always work for each individual stock. We don't wish catastrophic capital loss on anyone. For example, we sympathize with anyone who was caught holding Jiumaojiu International Holdings Limited (HKG:9922) during the five years that saw its share price drop a whopping 90%. We also note that the stock has performed poorly over the last year, with the share price down 45%. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 35% in the last 90 days. We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.

With the stock having lost 11% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Jiumaojiu International Holdings became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics might give us a better handle on how its value is changing over time.

We don't think that the 1.1% is big factor in the share price, since it's quite small, as dividends go. In contrast to the share price, revenue has actually increased by 17% a year in the five year period. A more detailed examination of the revenue and earnings may or may not explain why the share price languishes; there could be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 39% in the last year, Jiumaojiu International Holdings shareholders lost 44% (even including dividends). Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 14% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Jiumaojiu International Holdings better, we need to consider many other factors.
