JNBY Design's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. The last payment made up 73% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. Since the dividend is just paying out cash to shareholders, we care more about the cash payout ratio from which we can see plenty is being left over for reinvestment in the business.
EPS is set to grow by 25.1% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 90%, which is on the higher side, but certainly still feasible.
JNBY Design's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
It's comforting to see that JNBY Design has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. Due to this, we are a little bit cautious about the dividend consistency over a full economic cycle. Since 2017, the dividend has gone from CN¥0.479 total annually to CN¥1.23. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 14% over that duration. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. JNBY Design has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 12% per annum. Past earnings growth has been decent, but unless this is one of those rare businesses that can grow without additional capital investment or marketing spend, we'd generally expect the higher payout ratio to limit its future growth prospects.
JNBY Design Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that JNBY Design is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
