We Like These Underlying Return On Capital Trends At ECI Technology Holdings (HKG:8013)
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at ECI Technology Holdings (HKG:8013) so let's look a bit deeper.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on ECI Technology Holdings is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.069 = HK$6.4m ÷ (HK$108m - HK$15m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to February 2025).
So, ECI Technology Holdings has an ROCE of 6.9%. On its own that's a low return on capital but it's in line with the industry's average returns of 6.7%.

The Trend Of ROCE
Even though ROCE is still low in absolute terms, it's good to see it's heading in the right direction. The numbers show that in the last five years, the returns generated on capital employed have grown considerably to 6.9%. The amount of capital employed has increased too, by 65%. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
In another part of our analysis, we noticed that the company's ratio of current liabilities to total assets decreased to 14%, which broadly means the business is relying less on its suppliers or short-term creditors to fund its operations. This tells us that ECI Technology Holdings has grown its returns without a reliance on increasing their current liabilities, which we're very happy with.
The Key Takeaway
To sum it up, ECI Technology Holdings has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. Considering the stock has delivered 4.9% to its stockholders over the last five years, it may be fair to think that investors aren't fully aware of the promising trends yet.
