The Returns At Theme International Holdings (HKG:990) Aren't Growing
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. That's why when we briefly looked at Theme International Holdings' (HKG:990) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Theme International Holdings is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = HK$1.1b ÷ (HK$18b - HK$10b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
Therefore, Theme International Holdings has an ROCE of 15%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 5.8% generated by the Trade Distributors industry.

So How Is Theme International Holdings' ROCE Trending?
While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. The company has consistently earned 15% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 503% in that time. Since 15% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
On a side note, Theme International Holdings has done well to reduce current liabilities to 59% of total assets over the last five years. This can eliminate some of the risks inherent in the operations because the business has less outstanding obligations to their suppliers and or short-term creditors than they did previously. We'd like to see this trend continue though because as it stands today, thats still a pretty high level.
Our Take On Theme International Holdings' ROCE
To sum it up, Theme International Holdings has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 272% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
