Here's Why I Think Theme International Holdings (HKG:990) Is An Interesting Stock
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Theme International Holdings (HKG:990). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Theme International Holdings's Improving Profits
In the last three years Theme International Holdings's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, Theme International Holdings's EPS shot from HK$0.014 to HK$0.038, over the last year. You don't see 163% year-on-year growth like that, very often. That could be a sign that the business has reached a true inflection point.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While we note Theme International Holdings's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 41% to HK$16b. That's progress.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check Theme International Holdings's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.
Are Theme International Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
As a general rule, I think it worth considering how much the CEO is paid, since unreasonably high rates could be considered against the interests of shareholders. For companies with market capitalizations between HK$7.8b and HK$25b, like Theme International Holdings, the median CEO pay is around HK$4.7m.
Theme International Holdings offered total compensation worth HK$2.4m to its CEO in the year to . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.
Should You Add Theme International Holdings To Your Watchlist?
Theme International Holdings's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. Such fast EPS growth makes me wonder if the business has hit an inflection point (and I mean the good kind.) At the same time the reasonable CEO compensation reflects well on the board of directors. While I couldn't be sure without a deeper dive, it does seem that Theme International Holdings has the hallmarks of a quality business; and that would make it well worth watching.
