CITIC Limited's (HKG:267) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking

Published
SEHK:267

When close to half the companies in Hong Kong have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 10x, you may consider CITIC Limited (HKG:267) as a highly attractive investment with its 3.3x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

CITIC could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For CITIC?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, CITIC would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 11%. Regardless, EPS has managed to lift by a handy 21% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 3.2% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 15% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that CITIC's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What We Can Learn From CITIC's P/E?

Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that CITIC maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
