CK Hutchison Holdings' (HKG:1) Shareholders Will Receive A Smaller Dividend Than Last Year
The board of CK Hutchison Holdings Limited (HKG:1) has announced it will be reducing its dividend by 10.0% from last year's payment of HK$0.84 on the 14th of September, with shareholders receiving HK$0.756. However, the dividend yield of 6.7% still remains in a typical range for the industry.

CK Hutchison Holdings' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. However, CK Hutchison Holdings' earnings easily cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 14.9% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 32%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. Since 2013, the dividend has gone from HK$3.16 total annually to HK$2.93. Payments have been decreasing at a very slow pace in this time period. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Over the past five years, it looks as though CK Hutchison Holdings' EPS has declined at around 4.9% a year. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth. Earnings are predicted to grow over the next year, but we would remain cautious until a track record of earnings growth is established.
Our Thoughts On CK Hutchison Holdings' Dividend
Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
