Space Hellas' (ATH:SPACE) Dividend Is Being Reduced To €0.15

Space Hellas S.A. (ATH:SPACE) has announced that on 25th of July, it will be paying a dividend of€0.15, which a reduction from last year's comparable dividend. This means the annual payment is 2.6% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry.

Space Hellas' Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Before making this announcement, Space Hellas was earning enough to cover the dividend, but it wasn't generating any free cash flows. Since a dividend means the company is paying out cash to investors, this could prove to be a problem in the future.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 4.1% if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 60% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Space Hellas' Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

Space Hellas has been paying dividends for a while, but the track record isn't stellar. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. The dividend has gone from an annual total of €0.03 in 2017 to the most recent total annual payment of €0.15. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 22% over that duration. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.

Space Hellas May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend

Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Earnings has been rising at 4.1% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. Growth of 4.1% may indicate that the company has limited investment opportunity so it is returning its earnings to shareholders instead. While this isn't necessarily a negative, it definitely signals that dividend growth could be constrained in the future unless earnings start to pick up again.

Our Thoughts On Space Hellas' Dividend

Overall, it's not great to see that the dividend has been cut, but this might be explained by the payments being a bit high previously. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. I won't rely solely on Retail Sales. It only tell you what was spent. Credit data is the one that tells you how. For me the latter is more important than the former.
