Lanakam S.A.'s (ATH:LANAC) 34% Share Price Surge Not Quite Adding Up
Lanakam S.A. (ATH:LANAC) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 34% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 46% in the last year.
Since its price has surged higher, Lanakam's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 28.1x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Greece, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 14x and even P/E's below 9x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Lanakam over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Lanakam's Growth Trending?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Lanakam would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 43% decrease to the company's bottom line. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 13% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 13% shows it's an unpleasant look.
In light of this, it's alarming that Lanakam's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
What We Can Learn From Lanakam's P/E?
Lanakam's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Lanakam revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given the market is set to grow. When we see earnings heading backwards and underperforming the market forecasts, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
