Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So on that note, Gek Terna (ATH:GEKTERNA) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Gek Terna:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = €370m ÷ (€6.3b - €2.8b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
So, Gek Terna has an ROCE of 11%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 9.2% generated by the Construction industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Gek Terna Tell Us?
Gek Terna's ROCE growth is quite impressive. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 106% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. It's worth looking deeper into this though because while it's great that the business is more efficient, it might also mean that going forward the areas to invest internally for the organic growth are lacking.
For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 44% of its operations, which isn't ideal. And with current liabilities at those levels, that's pretty high.
The Bottom Line
To sum it up, Gek Terna is collecting higher returns from the same amount of capital, and that's impressive. Since the stock has returned a staggering 185% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
Gek Terna does come with some risks though, we found 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those makes us a bit uncomfortable...
