Investors Who Bought ContourGlobal (LON:GLO) Shares A Year Ago Are Now Up 22%
We believe investing is smart because history shows that stock markets go higher in the long term. But if when you choose to buy stocks, some of them will be below average performers. Over the last year the ContourGlobal plc (LON:GLO) share price is up 22%, but that's less than the broader market return. On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 15% in three years.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the last year ContourGlobal grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 335%. It's fair to say that the share price gain of 22% did not keep pace with the EPS growth. So it seems like the market has cooled on ContourGlobal, despite the growth. Interesting.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of ContourGlobal, it has a TSR of 30% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
ContourGlobal shareholders are up 30% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately this falls short of the market return of around 42%. On the bright side that gain is actually better than the average return of 0.3% over the last three years, implying that the company is doing better recently. If the share price is up as a result of improved business performance, then this kind of improvement may be sustained. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should be aware of the 3 warning signs we've spotted with ContourGlobal .
