Slowing Rates Of Return At Jet2 (LON:JET2) Leave Little Room For Excitement
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. With that in mind, the ROCE of Jet2 (LON:JET2) looks decent, right now, so lets see what the trend of returns can tell us.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Jet2, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

So, Jet2 has an ROCE of 16%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 8.7% generated by the Airlines industry.

The Trend Of ROCE
While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. Since 16% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
On a side note, Jet2's current liabilities are still rather high at 42% of total assets. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
Our Take On Jet2's ROCE
To sum it up, Jet2 has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. And the stock has followed suit returning a meaningful 76% to shareholders over the last five years. So even though the stock might be more "expensive" than it was before, we think the strong fundamentals warrant this stock for further research.
