What Westminster Group PLC's (LON:WSG) 30% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You

Westminster Group PLC (LON:WSG) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 30% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 53%.

Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that Westminster Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Electronic industry in the United Kingdom, where the median P/S ratio is around 1x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has Westminster Group Performed Recently?

Westminster Group has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S from rising. Those who are bullish on Westminster Group will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Westminster Group's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 20%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 26% drop in revenue in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 4.1% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Westminster Group's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

The Bottom Line On Westminster Group's P/S

Westminster Group's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We find it unexpected that Westminster Group trades at a P/S ratio that is comparable to the rest of the industry, despite experiencing declining revenues during the medium-term, while the industry as a whole is expected to grow. Even though it matches the industry, we're uncomfortable with the current P/S ratio, as this dismal revenue performance is unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
