Dunelm Group (LON:DNLM) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At £0.515
The board of Dunelm Group plc (LON:DNLM) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 1.0% on the 8th of April to £0.515, up from last year's comparable payment of £0.51. This will take the annual payment to 7.8% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Dunelm Group's Future Dividends May Potentially Be At Risk
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Dunelm Group's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
The next 12 months is set to see EPS grow by 12.0%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could reach 101%, which probably can't continue without putting some pressure on the balance sheet.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of £0.20 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of £0.785. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 15% over that duration. Dunelm Group has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.
Dunelm Group Could Grow Its Dividend
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. We are encouraged to see that Dunelm Group has grown earnings per share at 6.0% per year over the past five years. Since earnings per share is growing at an acceptable rate, and the payout policy is balanced, we think the company is positioning itself well to grow earnings and dividends in the future.
In Summary
In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
