Angling Direct Insiders Benefit From Selling Stock At UK£0.38
While it’s been a great week for Angling Direct PLC (LON:ANG) shareholders after stock gained 12%, company insiders might have missed out on those gains after selling stock earlier this year. The return on their investment would have been much higher had they held on to their stock.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
Angling Direct Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The Co-Founder & Non-Executive Director, Martyn Page, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£152k worth of shares at a price of UK£0.38 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of UK£0.51. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 3.6% of Martyn Page's holding. Martyn Page was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

Does Angling Direct Boast High Insider Ownership?
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Angling Direct insiders own 17% of the company, worth about UK£6.1m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
So What Do The Angling Direct Insider Transactions Indicate?
There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Angling Direct insiders. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company.
