How Much Are Advanced Oncotherapy plc (LON:AVO) Insiders Spending On Buying Shares?

We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Advanced Oncotherapy plc (LON:AVO).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

Advanced Oncotherapy Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Executive Chairman Michael Sinclair for UK£46k worth of shares, at about UK£0.34 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at around the current price of UK£0.34. That means they have been optimistic about the company in the past, though they may have changed their mind. If someone buys shares at well below current prices, it's a good sign on balance, but keep in mind they may no longer see value. Happily, the Advanced Oncotherapy insider decided to buy shares at close to current prices. Michael Sinclair was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Does Advanced Oncotherapy Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Advanced Oncotherapy insiders own 21% of the company, worth about UK£24m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
