Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at MHP (LON:MHPC) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for MHP:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.11 = US$376m ÷ (US$4.0b - US$625m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).

Therefore, MHP has an ROCE of 11%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the Food industry average of 13%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For MHP Tell Us?

MHP's ROCE growth is quite impressive. More specifically, while the company has kept capital employed relatively flat over the last five years, the ROCE has climbed 43% in that same time. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.

What We Can Learn From MHP's ROCE

To sum it up, MHP is collecting higher returns from the same amount of capital, and that's impressive. Considering the stock has delivered 7.0% to its stockholders over the last five years, it may be fair to think that investors aren't fully aware of the promising trends yet.
