The Springfield Properties (LON:SPR) Share Price Has Gained 27% And Shareholders Are Hoping For More

Just take a look at Springfield Properties Plc (LON:SPR), which is up 27%, over three years, soundly beating the market decline of 4.8% (not including dividends).

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the three years of share price growth, Springfield Properties actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) drop 4.9% per year.

Based on these numbers, we think that the decline in earnings per share may not be a good representation of how the business has changed over the years. Therefore, it makes sense to look into other metrics.

Languishing at just 1.3%, we doubt the dividend is doing much to prop up the share price. It could be that the revenue growth of 16% per year is viewed as evidence that Springfield Properties is growing. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth, and maybe shareholder's faith in better days ahead will be rewarded.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Springfield Properties the TSR over the last 3 years was 39%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

The last twelve months weren't great for Springfield Properties shares, which performed worse than the market, costing holders 4.4%, including dividends. Meanwhile, the broader market slid about 0.03%, likely weighing on the stock. Investors are up over three years, booking 12% per year, much better than the more recent returns.
