Rubis' (EPA:RUI) Stock On An Uptrend: Could Fundamentals Be Driving The Momentum?
Most readers would already be aware that Rubis' (EPA:RUI) stock increased significantly by 10% over the past three months. As most would know, fundamentals are what usually guide market price movements over the long-term, so we decided to look at the company's key financial indicators today to determine if they have any role to play in the recent price movement. Specifically, we decided to study Rubis' ROE in this article.
Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.

How Is ROE Calculated?
The formula for ROE is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Rubis is:
10% = €276m ÷ €2.7b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. So, this means that for every €1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of €0.10.
Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.
Rubis' Earnings Growth And 10% ROE
At first glance, Rubis seems to have a decent ROE. Further, the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 8.8%. Rubis' decent returns aren't reflected in Rubis'mediocre five year net income growth average of 4.6%. So, there could be some other factors at play that could be impacting the company's growth. For instance, the company pays out a huge portion of its earnings as dividends, or is faced with competitive pressures.
We then performed a comparison between Rubis' net income growth with the industry, which revealed that the company's growth is similar to the average industry growth of 4.7% in the same 5-year period.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. Is RUI fairly valued? This infographic on the company's intrinsic value has everything you need to know.
Is Rubis Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
Rubis has a three-year median payout ratio of 71% (implying that it keeps only 29% of its profits), meaning that it pays out most of its profits to shareholders as dividends, and as a result, the company has seen low earnings growth.
Moreover, Rubis has been paying dividends for at least ten years or more suggesting that management must have perceived that the shareholders prefer dividends over earnings growth. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company is expected to keep paying out approximately 61% of its profits over the next three years. As a result, Rubis' ROE is not expected to change by much either, which we inferred from the analyst estimate of 12% for future ROE.
Summary
In total, it does look like Rubis has some positive aspects to its business. Its earnings growth is decent, and the high ROE does contribute to that growth. However, investors could have benefitted even more from the high ROE, had the company been reinvesting more of its earnings. That being so, the latest analyst forecasts show that the company will continue to see an expansion in its earnings.
