After Leaping 25% Lumibird SA (EPA:LBIRD) Shares Are Not Flying Under The Radar
Lumibird SA (EPA:LBIRD) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 25% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 35% in the last twelve months.
Following the firm bounce in price, Lumibird's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 32.6x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in France, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 15x and even P/E's below 8x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Lumibird could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Growth For Lumibird?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Lumibird's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 32% decrease to the company's bottom line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 55% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 44% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 16% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Lumibird's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From Lumibird's P/E?
Shares in Lumibird have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Lumibird's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
