Getting In Cheap On Dassault Systèmes SE (EPA:DSY) Is Unlikely
Dassault Systèmes SE's (EPA:DSY) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 43.2x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in France, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 14x and even P/E's below 8x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Dassault Systèmes has been doing quite well of late. The P/E is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader market headwinds better than most. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Dassault Systèmes would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 6.6% last year. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see EPS up by 51% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 13% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 13% each year, which is not materially different.
With this information, we find it interesting that Dassault Systèmes is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What We Can Learn From Dassault Systèmes' P/E?
Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our examination of Dassault Systèmes' analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
