Soitec (EPA:SOI) Will Be Hoping To Turn Its Returns On Capital Around
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. Having said that, from a first glance at Soitec (EPA:SOI) we aren't jumping out of our chairs at how returns are trending, but let's have a deeper look.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Soitec is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.064 = €133m ÷ (€2.8b - €743m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
Therefore, Soitec has an ROCE of 6.4%. Even though it's in line with the industry average of 5.8%, it's still a low return by itself.

So How Is Soitec's ROCE Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Soitec, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 15% over the last five years. Meanwhile, the business is utilizing more capital but this hasn't moved the needle much in terms of sales in the past 12 months, so this could reflect longer term investments. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.
What We Can Learn From Soitec's ROCE
Bringing it all together, while we're somewhat encouraged by Soitec's reinvestment in its own business, we're aware that returns are shrinking. And investors appear hesitant that the trends will pick up because the stock has fallen 67% in the last five years. In any case, the stock doesn't have these traits of a multi-bagger discussed above, so if that's what you're looking for, we think you'd have more luck elsewhere.
Like most companies, Soitec does come with some risks, and we've found 2 warning signs that you should be aware of.
