Should You Be Adding Eurofins Scientific (EPA:ERF) To Your Watchlist Today?
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Eurofins Scientific (EPA:ERF). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

Eurofins Scientific's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Who among us would not applaud Eurofins Scientific's stratospheric annual EPS growth of 58%, compound, over the last three years? That sort of growth never lasts long, but like a shooting star it is well worth watching when it happens.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Eurofins Scientific shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 17% to 20%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Eurofins Scientific Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a €19b company like Eurofins Scientific. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. To be specific, they have €15m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Despite being just 0.08% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.
It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Eurofins Scientific, with market caps over €7.3b, is about €3.2m.
The CEO of Eurofins Scientific only received €1.2m in total compensation for the year ending . That looks like modest pay to me, and may hint at a certain respect for the interests of shareholders. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.
Does Eurofins Scientific Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
Eurofins Scientific's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bucket-load of shares, and the CEO pay seems really quite reasonable. The strong EPS improvement suggests the businesses is humming along. Eurofins Scientific certainly ticks a few of my boxes, so I think it's probably well worth further consideration. Still, you should learn about the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Eurofins Scientific .
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
