Here's Why I Think Eurofins Scientific (EPA:ERF) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Eurofins Scientific (EPA:ERF), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Eurofins Scientific's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that Eurofins Scientific has grown EPS by 58% per year, over the last three years. Growth that fast may well be fleeting, but like a lotus blooming from a murky pond, it sparks joy for the wary stock pickers.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Eurofins Scientific shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 11% to 22%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Eurofins Scientific Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a €21b company like Eurofins Scientific. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. To be specific, they have €17m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Despite being just 0.08% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Eurofins Scientific, with market caps over €6.9b, is about €2.8m.

The CEO of Eurofins Scientific only received €1.2m in total compensation for the year ending . That's clearly well below average, so at a glance, that arrangement seems generous to shareholders, and points to a modest remuneration culture. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Is Eurofins Scientific Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Eurofins Scientific's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. The sweetener is that insiders have a mountain of stock, and the CEO remuneration is quite reasonable. The strong EPS improvement suggests the businesses is humming along. Eurofins Scientific certainly ticks a few of my boxes, so I think it's probably well worth further consideration. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for Eurofins Scientific (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that you need to take into consideration.

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
