Hopscotch Global PR Group's (EPA:ALHOP) periodic dividend will be increasing on the 5th of July to €0.65, with investors receiving 30% more than last year's €0.50. This takes the annual payment to 2.3% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Hopscotch Global PR Group's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Based on the last payment, Hopscotch Global PR Group was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 127.7%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 25% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was €0.25 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €0.50. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7.2% a year over that time. We have seen cuts in the past, so while the growth looks promising we would be a little bit cautious about its track record.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Although it's important to note that Hopscotch Global PR Group's earnings per share has basically not grown from where it was five years ago, which could erode the purchasing power of the dividend over time.
