Can Baikowski SA's (EPA:ALBKK) Weak Financials Pull The Plug On The Stock's Current Momentum On Its Share Price?
Most readers would already be aware that Baikowski's (EPA:ALBKK) stock increased significantly by 33% over the past three months. We, however wanted to have a closer look at its key financial indicators as the markets usually pay for long-term fundamentals, and in this case, they don't look very promising. Specifically, we decided to study Baikowski's ROE in this article.
Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.

How To Calculate Return On Equity?
Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Baikowski is:
4.8% = €1.6m ÷ €33m (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2020).
The 'return' is the profit over the last twelve months. That means that for every €1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated €0.05 in profit.
What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.
Baikowski's Earnings Growth And 4.8% ROE
On the face of it, Baikowski's ROE is not much to talk about. However, its ROE is similar to the industry average of 4.8%, so we won't completely dismiss the company. But then again, Baikowski's five year net income shrunk at a rate of 28%. Bear in mind, the company does have a slightly low ROE. Therefore, the decline in earnings could also be the result of this.
That being said, we compared Baikowski's performance with the industry and were concerned when we found that while the company has shrunk its earnings, the industry has grown its earnings at a rate of 4.8% in the same period.
Earnings growth is an important metric to consider when valuing a stock. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. Is Baikowski Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
While the company did payout a portion of its dividend in the past, it currently doesn't pay a dividend. This implies that potentially all of its profits are being reinvested in the business.
Conclusion
On the whole, Baikowski's performance is quite a big let-down. Because the company is not reinvesting much into the business, and given the low ROE, it's not surprising to see the lack or absence of growth in its earnings.
