Is Now The Time To Put L'Air Liquide (EPA:AI) On Your Watchlist?
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like L'Air Liquide (EPA:AI), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

L'Air Liquide's Improving Profits
Even modest earnings per share growth (EPS) can create meaningful value, when it is sustained reliably from year to year. So EPS growth can certainly encourage an investor to take note of a stock. It's good to see that L'Air Liquide's EPS have grown from €4.80 to €5.49 over twelve months. I doubt many would complain about that 15% gain.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). L'Air Liquide reported flat revenue and EBIT margins over the last year. That's not a major concern but nor does it point to the long term growth we like to see.

Are L'Air Liquide Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a €71b company like L'Air Liquide. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. With a whopping €83m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. That's certainly enough to make me think that management will be very focussed on long term growth.
Does L'Air Liquide Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One important encouraging feature of L'Air Liquide is that it is growing profits. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for L'Air Liquide that you need to take into consideration.
