Bastide Le Confort Médical (EPA:BLC) Has A Somewhat Strained Balance Sheet
Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We note that Bastide Le Confort Médical SA (EPA:BLC) does have debt on its balance sheet. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?
When Is Debt A Problem?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Bastide Le Confort Médical Carry?
The chart below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Bastide Le Confort Médical had €360.1m in debt in December 2023; about the same as the year before. However, because it has a cash reserve of €35.8m, its net debt is less, at about €324.4m.
A Look At Bastide Le Confort Médical's Liabilities
The latest balance sheet data shows that Bastide Le Confort Médical had liabilities of €198.1m due within a year, and liabilities of €377.9m falling due after that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of €35.8m as well as receivables valued at €122.5m due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by €417.7m.
The deficiency here weighs heavily on the €175.9m company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. So we definitely think shareholders need to watch this one closely. After all, Bastide Le Confort Médical would likely require a major re-capitalisation if it had to pay its creditors today.
We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.
While we wouldn't worry about Bastide Le Confort Médical's net debt to EBITDA ratio of 3.8, we think its super-low interest cover of 2.0 times is a sign of high leverage. So shareholders should probably be aware that interest expenses appear to have really impacted the business lately. On a slightly more positive note, Bastide Le Confort Médical grew its EBIT at 12% over the last year, further increasing its ability to manage debt. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Bastide Le Confort Médical can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
Finally, a company can only pay off debt with cold hard cash, not accounting profits. So we clearly need to look at whether that EBIT is leading to corresponding free cash flow. Over the most recent three years, Bastide Le Confort Médical recorded free cash flow worth 66% of its EBIT, which is around normal, given free cash flow excludes interest and tax. This free cash flow puts the company in a good position to pay down debt, when appropriate.
Our View
On the face of it, Bastide Le Confort Médical's interest cover left us tentative about the stock, and its level of total liabilities was no more enticing than the one empty restaurant on the busiest night of the year. But at least it's pretty decent at converting EBIT to free cash flow; that's encouraging. We should also note that Healthcare industry companies like Bastide Le Confort Médical commonly do use debt without problems. Once we consider all the factors above, together, it seems to us that Bastide Le Confort Médical's debt is making it a bit risky. Some people like that sort of risk, but we're mindful of the potential pitfalls, so we'd probably prefer it carry less debt. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. We've identified 4 warning signs with Bastide Le Confort Médical (at least 1 which is a bit concerning) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
