Here's Why GL Events (EPA:GLO) Has A Meaningful Debt Burden

So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. Importantly, GL Events SA (EPA:GLO) does carry debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?

What Risk Does Debt Bring?

Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. What Is GL Events's Net Debt?

You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that GL Events had €1.04b of debt in December 2023, down from €1.12b, one year before. On the flip side, it has €540.1m in cash leading to net debt of about €500.5m.

A Look At GL Events' Liabilities

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that GL Events had liabilities of €1.13b due within 12 months and liabilities of €1.33b due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of €540.1m and €330.8m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by €1.59b.

This deficit casts a shadow over the €518.4m company, like a colossus towering over mere mortals. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. After all, GL Events would likely require a major re-capitalisation if it had to pay its creditors today.

We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.

GL Events's net debt is sitting at a very reasonable 2.4 times its EBITDA, while its EBIT covered its interest expense just 3.5 times last year. While that doesn't worry us too much, it does suggest the interest payments are somewhat of a burden. Importantly, GL Events grew its EBIT by 32% over the last twelve months, and that growth will make it easier to handle its debt. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if GL Events can strengthen its balance sheet over time. But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. So the logical step is to look at the proportion of that EBIT that is matched by actual free cash flow. Happily for any shareholders, GL Events actually produced more free cash flow than EBIT over the last three years. There's nothing better than incoming cash when it comes to staying in your lenders' good graces.

Our View

We feel some trepidation about GL Events's difficulty level of total liabilities, but we've got positives to focus on, too. To wit both its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow and EBIT growth rate were encouraging signs. We think that GL Events's debt does make it a bit risky, after considering the aforementioned data points together. That's not necessarily a bad thing, since leverage can boost returns on equity, but it is something to be aware of. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start.
