What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Having said that, while the ROCE is currently high for Vaisala Oyj (HEL:VAIAS), we aren't jumping out of our chairs because returns are decreasing.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Vaisala Oyj:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.20 = €60m ÷ (€416m - €109m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).

Therefore, Vaisala Oyj has an ROCE of 20%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 16% earned by companies in a similar industry.

The Trend Of ROCE

When we looked at the ROCE trend at Vaisala Oyj, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, while the ROCE is still high, it's fallen from 27% where it was five years ago. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.

The Bottom Line On Vaisala Oyj's ROCE

Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for Vaisala Oyj. And long term investors must be optimistic going forward because the stock has returned a huge 101% to shareholders in the last five years. So while the underlying trends could already be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
