Tokmanni Group Oyj's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 108% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only 42%. Given that the dividend is a cash outflow, we think that cash is more important than accounting measures of profit when assessing the dividend, so this is a mitigating factor.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 95.4%. Assuming the dividend continues along the course it has been charting recently, our estimates show the payout ratio being 61% which brings it into quite a comfortable range.
Tokmanni Group Oyj's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Even in its relatively short history, the company has reduced the dividend at least once. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. Since 2016, the dividend has gone from €0.41 total annually to €0.76. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 8.0% a year over that time. We like to see dividends have grown at a reasonable rate, but with at least one substantial cut in the payments, we're not certain this dividend stock would be ideal for someone intending to live on the income.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 2.3% per year. So the company has struggled to grow its EPS yet it's still paying out 108% of its earnings. This gives limited room for the company to raise the dividend in the future.
In Summary
In summary, while it's good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we are a bit cautious about Tokmanni Group Oyj's payments, as there could be some issues with sustaining them into the future. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
